Caravan parks in Scotland can be your gateway to the Highlands

If you're looking for a holiday amongst wild scenery, there are very few places more wild and beautiful than the Scottish Highlands. You won't have to pay a fortune for a hotel, either – caravan parks in Scotland can be inexpensive and some are located in the perfect locations for exploring the Highlands.

The great thing is that you'll be closer to the fresh air, and you'll have the benefit of the peace and quiet, as many sites are located away from busy towns and traffic. It's the ideal way to get back to nature.

Gas and electricity prices go up again…

As I work from home, I have to constantly keep an eye on my gas and electricity usage. And this past year or so prices just seem to keep rising and rising…

It’s actually quite depressing. I can’t really cut back any further on my usage, as I’ve already cut back as much as I can, so there doesn’t seem to be a lot I can do about it. This long, cold winter (which we thankfully seem to be coming out of now at long last) really hasn’t helped matters any, either – my energy expenditure is way up on this time last year.

I have heard that you can switch electricity and gas suppliers to get better deals from other companies. I’ll have to seriously look into this, as it sounds very tempting at the moment…

Wind turbines – the future for sustainable power?

Wind turbines are springing up all over the UK at the moment. With each new wind farm that is proposed, however, a storm of protest usually erupts from people who fear that the development will ruin the natural beauty of the landscape it is set in.

I can’t understand people who are against wind turbines. We need to start focussing our efforts on sustainable power generation and away from fossil fuels as soon as possible. Fossil fuels are going to run out in the not-too-distant future, and we need to have alternatives in place if we are to continue using power in the manner we have become accustomed to. Otherwise we will leave a terrible legacy to future generations which they will have to deal with as best they can.

Theatre ticket vouchers – the ideal gift

It was my sister’s birthday last week, so to celebrate I gave her some theatre ticket vouchers. I’d never heard of these before I stumbled across them online, but they make an ideal gift.

They are available in a variety of denominations, and are accepted by theatres throughout the UK. Also, they don’t have an expiry date, so my sister will be able to wait until something she really wants to see comes on before using her vouchers.

She’s always loved the theatre, so my gift will hopefully give her an excellent night out in the future that she will really enjoy. I’m usually not very good at getting presents for people, so I’m really pleased that I got my act together this time…

Geothermal power – energy from the earth

While solar energy and wind power might grab the majority of the headlines when it comes to sustainable energy, geothermal power is often overlooked by scientists and environmentalists alike.

Geothermal activity has been harnessed by humans for centuries, with the ancient Romans utilising heat from the earth to warm their homes. This renewable energy source is cost-effective, reliable and sustainable, but its use has generally been limited only to areas around the edges of tectonic plates.

Still, as technology advances we can expect to see a greater shift towards geothermal power as it becomes even more commercially viable and so more attractive to energy companies.

Scottish knitwear – the perfect present

It’s my sister’s birthday in a few days time, and I’ve finally managed to locate a suitable present for her. It’s her 40th birthday, so I rally wanted to get her something special.

She’s always been a big fan of Scottish knitwear, so I’m going to really splash out on her and get her a cashmere jumper. I’m not usually a big spender when it comes to presents, but she is going to be 40 so she’ll probably need some cheering up…

Scottish knit is famous throughout the world for the high quality of its craftsmanship, so I’m sure she’ll love it. The only problem now is choosing which colour to buy her…

Taking A Levels through home study

A friend of mine has just finished taking three A Levels through home study. He didn’t do too well at school – not because he wasn’t clever, but just because he didn’t really apply himself when he should have done. He’s always felt like he missed out, so last year he took the plunge and signed up to three distance learning A Level courses.

He took English, History and Maths, and, much to his delight, he passed all three with flying colours. He was much more motivated second time around, and diligently worked through all the exercises in turn. He actually really enjoyed it, and found it really satisfying when he finally got the qualifications he’d wanted to get for so long.

Gaining computer skills through home learning

So I’ve decided to brush up on my computer skills with a home learning course. I’ve looked into it online, and the one I’m thinking of going on has had a ton of positive reviews and looks to be just the thing to keep me up to speed with all the latest developments in my field.

It’s relatively cheap, and because it’s a home study course I can work through it at my own pace and take as long as I want to finish it. There’s plenty of backup and support for students too, so it’s not like I’ll be totally on my own while I’m studying.

Man has 2,000 mice as pets

A man in Wales let his house become overrun by his 2,000 pet mice. Apparently they roamed free throughout his house, nestled chairs, under the carpet, in his sofa and even in his bath.

According to the story, the rodents were taken away and housed with a local animal sanctuary, but the man – in his 30s – was allowed to keep two of them as pets, and it wasn’t long before his two little mousey friends had become another monster brood of 500.

“Why they let him keep two is beyond belief,” commented a neighbour, “They could at least have made sure they were both the same sex.”

The man is no longer permitted to keep mice as pets, it was reported.
